INTRODUCTION

Praised by Time Out magazine as a “must visit culinary experience” in Beijing, Domus Restaurant is an avant-garde lifestyle concept created by Executive Chef Jamie DeRosa whose background includes stints at some of the world’s best kitchens including Patina, the Fat Duck and The French Laundry.

Located in a quiet hutong courtyard house adjacent to the Forbidden City, this project presented a recurring design challenge for our studio in China: how to go about designing a typically non-Chinese program within a stylistically Chinese building typology while keeping the original building intact and not confusing the end consumer. In using a collection of spatial, zonal and material collages (eg. using traditional Chinese bronze handicraft techniques to sculpt a contemporary styled bar) we created a solution that fuses together Chinese and Western elements allowing Domus to both counterpoint the two different cultures and celebrate their commonalities.
