Nestled in a Shanghai suburb and overlooked by its neighbors on all four sides, this previously unassuming 1930’s house was given a new composite identity. The old building became a vessel to contain a series of new architectural interventions as detached objects both internally and externally. The objects’ materialities and forms either traced back or reacted to the context and structure of the original building. Through this complex sequence of omissions and/or additions, Casa Cu was transformed into a dynamic, hand-crafted hybrid art deco building.
