INTRODUCTION

Unlike most 5 star hotels in Kunming which tend to be concentrated around Dianchi Lake, The Grand Hyatt Hotel and Residences is a 332 room hotel situated in downtown Kunming as part of the Spring City 66 (Hang Lung) mixed use development on the corner of Beijing Road and Shangyi Street and sitting opposite the heritage Stone House in Chahua Park-
This 332 room hotel, with 3 restaurants, extensive meeting rooms and ballroom facilities will act as a gateway for the discerning traveler to both the city and the province of Yunnan.

However, unlike the competitive hotel set that constantly rely on overused cultural motifs/ textures from the region, our studio wanted to take a fresher, more original (perhaps abstract) take on the environment and people of the region, to create a truly immersive regional design language based on curated stories and narratives for The Grand Hyatt Hotel and Residences, Kunming.

Through rigorously applying a set of parameters to the design, a number of observations were created that could inform how the interiors could be composed:

a celebration of the colours and textures of the ‘environment’
a celebration of the colours and crafts of the ‘people’
Taking the ideas of the environment and people, these observations (narratives) were rigorously applied over the public areas and rooms respectively- observing continuously that the end result was informative, original and most importantly devoid of pastiche and the obvious!

(please note that Tao were developing their own concepts for the F+B, so these areas may differ slightly to our strategies)
