INTRODUCTION

Paying homage to the original Peacock Room located in a museum in Washington DC, USA, the Shanghai counterpart distills the key elements of the original, the shelves, the vases, the textures and the art and creates a dramatic spatial re-construction.

The drama is reinforced through an enfilade sequence of compressed and open linear spaces, and accentuated through the use of a single table that runs the entire length of the room, terminated either end by the circular vip table and the colour changing bar respectively.

Lining the main room the shelving construction is strictly symmetrical, but is asymmetrical decorated with a series of plain white bone china vase silhouettes that echo the original room. These ‘placed’ vases reveal concealed internally illuminated images on the body of the vase as evening moves into night.

The vip room respectfully samples but simultaneously distorts the original James McNeill Whistler’s masterpiece - resplendent with leather ceilings painted with peacock motifs and shelves with hidden mirrors, that echoes the past and decorates the future.

Vanity of the Peacock is finally played out in the bathroom with the 'over vanity’ mirror. Spending too much time at the mirror pruning oneself, triggers a sensor in the bathroom, the lights dim and rotating orange peacock feathers appear lighting the otherwise very bland tile walls.
