Due to strict government and zoning regulations, we had to build all the necessary architecture for the gift store off site and later insert them into the frame of the former Imperial Theatre located on the grounds of the Summer Palace. Tasked with creating a recognizably Chinese image for the store without being overly stylistic, we used traditional Chinese furniture techniques as inspiration and constructed a series of brushed bronze framing devices for a changeable menu of various flexible Huali timber display systems that could be changed out or modified as product and market understanding developed.
